“The figures I use are figures I see in reality. In this sense my work is simply a mirror to my surroundings.”
Sameer Al-Daham was born in 1955 in Riyadh where he has continued to live throughout his life. He has participated in national exhibitions and will hold his first solo exhibition in late 2008. Sameer currently works as the Art Advisor to the Ministry of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia and as a result has dedicated much of his life to promoting contemporary art throughout The Kingdom.
From a young age Al-Daham was recognized for his creative talent and as a result was encouraged and supported by his parents who raised him in a creative environment. His greatest influence is fellow exhibitor and art teacher Ali Al-Ruzaiza. Though their styles are different they share an artistic vernacular.
For ‘Edge of Arabia’ Al-Daham has contributed Turath, meaning ‘heritage’ or ‘old style’. It relates an expressionistic account of the people, streets and landscape of Al-Daham’s past. It also references subtly the pace of change in Saudi Arabia.
